Caleb SorensenJune 6, 20241

I spent years drinking flat, muddy chocolate milk masquerading as soda fountain history before an eighty-year-old counterman in Brooklyn showed me my mistake. A true classic diner style egg cream recipe does not rely on measuring cups or fancy gadgets; it depends on kinetic force, near-freezing temperatures, and rapid wrist torque. When made correctly, it […]

Caleb SorensenMay 9, 20241

Some brunch dishes earn their place on the menu because they are familiar. Others earn it because they are difficult to execute well at home. I am far more interested in the second group. When I look for the best brunch dishes to order at a restaurant, I focus on foods that benefit from professional […]

The Sunday Dinner Traditions That Make Every Plate Feel Like Home

Caleb SorensenMay 6, 20240

I like to think a family meal begins before anyone takes a seat. It starts with the scrape of a serving spoon, the smell of something simmering, and someone asking whether there is enough bread. When I explore comfort food traditions at family sunday dinners, those small details interest me as much as the recipes. […]

How Food Aromas Bring Back Comforting Memories: Why One Whiff Feels Like Home

Caleb SorensenFebruary 21, 20240

I think the most interesting part of a familiar meal can happen before the first bite. A little butter browning or bread warming can make an ordinary kitchen feel connected to another time. When I explore how food aromas bring back comforting memories, I find that the explanation reaches beyond hunger. Smell can call up […]

The Midwest’s Comfort Food Traditions Have a Story to Tell

Caleb SorensenFebruary 6, 20240

I find a crowded potluck table more revealing than a restaurant menu. A bubbling casserole, a basket of homemade rolls, and a pie with an uneven crust show how people care for one another. Exploring comfort food traditions in the American midwest means looking beyond rich ingredients to the occasions that make these dishes meaningful. […]

Forgotten Breakfast Foods From the 1950s That Vanished From American Tables

Caleb SorensenJanuary 7, 20243

A 1950s breakfast could be surprisingly resourceful, surprisingly processed, and sometimes downright unusual by today’s standards. One household might start the day with bacon grease toast or fried cornmeal mush, while another reached for canned peaches, cottage cheese, Spam, or a brightly packaged box of cereal. That mix of thrift and convenience is what makes […]
